Ceiling Fan LED Lighting

Are LED light options available on Spinifex Ceiling Fans?

Not yet!  The Spinifex team is watching the development of LED lights closely and continue to work with LED manufacturers to find opportunities to integrate LED lighting options into our products.  For LED’s to be viable in ceiling fans we have to address a number of issues, including:

Directionality:  LED light is highly directional resulting in a spot light effect.  When that is mounted at the bottom of a ceiling fan it results in very uneven room illumination, with a bright central part of the room and dark corners and walls.  Some manufactures have developed lenses to improve this but these are either expensive or significantly reduce the energy efficiency of the light.

Cooling and durability:  LED lights need to be kept cool to work efficiently and last.  As such mounting them on the back of a heat generating ceiling fan motor is a problem.

Colour render:  The quality and evenness of the light generated by LEDs is rapidly improving, but is still inferior to halogen technology.  The issue is that LED light is emitted at specific frequencies.  Light from conventional incandescent and halogen technology emits light across the full range of frequencies or colour spectrum.  This is in part why they are not energy efficient because they emit energy at frequencies outside the human visual spectrum.  It is also worth noting that compact fluorescent lighting also suffers from the same poor colour render issues currently experienced by LED lighting.

Cost:  LED lights of the quality Spinifex would include in our products are still prohibitively expensive.  Fortunately this is changing with nearly all R&D spend into lighting going towards LED technology.

Keep watching this space for future developments.  It is only a matter of time before Spinifex moves to LED.  However Spinifex will only be adopting LED lighting options when we are convinced the balance between light quality, durability and price is right.
