Why Use Ceiling Fans
The buildings we live and work in are more than functional spaces. They say a lot about who we are and what we value. Interior design plays a significant part in this and the humble ceiling fan is a design element gaining popularity. The attraction to ceiling fans is because of i) the cooling comfort they add to a space, ii) their reduced environmental footprint, and iii) their increasingly simple and elegant styling that complements our crisp and clean environments.
COOLING COMFORT
The wind chill created by ceiling fans helps nature’s own cooling system by allowing our skin to breathe and cool us down. It is also common for people to prefer to sleep under a ceiling fan because it doesn’t suck the moisture out of the air, which can leave eyes, throat and skin dry and sore.
Something else, most people don’t think to turn on a ceiling fan when it’s cold inside, but this can actually warm up a room by pushing warm air down from the ceiling. Circulating the warm air also reduces condensation on windows.
REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT
In the real world where most of us drive cars and enjoy hot showers, it is nice to be able to give a little back to the environment. A ceiling fan on high uses about 2.0% of the energy of a small air-conditioning system on high (70w vs 3,500w), and while ceiling fans don’t necessarily replace air-conditioners entirely, they are estimated to allow the thermostat of air-conditioners to be raised by 4°C when used together for the same cooling effect. Less widely known but equally as valuable, ceiling fans are effective in winter at bringing warm air down from the ceiling and stopping the pooling of cold air on the floor.
SIMPLE AND ELEGANT STYLING
Design matters! This is especially true for ceiling fans because even the subtlest design gets noticed hanging in the middle of a room. In the world of ceiling fans, good design is found where form and function come together with elegant simplicity. This always includes the quiet and efficient movement of air, the option of effective illumination, and an intuitive control system. From there a fan must also have a pleasing form that, depending on the desired look, subtly integrates into a room to minimise its visual and spatial impact, or confidently dares to be noticed.
